What are the repercussions of boys who are never taught to respect women or understand the definition of consent? They often grow into men who are not held accountable for abuse, assault, rape, and murder. I am a survivor of such a man, a twenty-six-year-old who raped me at fifteen, then later raped his wife, children, and others. A decade ago, I shared my story about the night that changed my life forever. Forty years later, that night still haunts me—less intensely, but the body always remembers, even when the mind forgets. I have a guttural need to scream so loud my voice is heard on the other side of the world. It makes no difference what side of the aisle you sit on—this week has been a shitshow. We live in a country where perpetrators are protected, and survivors continue to be victimized. More than a thousand survivors and more than thirty years since the first report, yet justice is nowhere to be found. The only descriptive words I can think of are "Twilight Zone." In reference to the Epstein files, I've begun using the term "the gift that just keeps on giving." Of course, this is sarcasm. I  made the conscious decision not to read all the disturbing facts in the Epstein files. It was a proactive choice to protect my mental and emotional health. Scrolling through social media, I read a few pages. It was a colossal error in judgment on my part. Now I don't need to read them as snippets are released across social media. Everything I read and hear makes the worst horror movie ever released look like an episode of Sesame Street.  The eerie silence surrounding these files and the lack of justice are precisely why victims do not come forward.
